Basically, you need to eat fewer calories by eating healthy foods, and get daily exercise if you want to live a healthy lifestyle and maybe lose some weight. You need to make a plan of action.
Here are some easy tips for getting started:
- Check the labels of the food you have in your home. Only keep the ones that do not have high fructose corn syrup, trans fat (uses the word hydrogenated), saturated fats, or foods that contain enriched or bleached flour.
- Keep healthy foods around and readily available in case you get hungry. Such foods include almonds, apples, walnuts, yogurt, trail mix, other fruits and vegetables. These healthy snacks will satisfy your hunger.
- Cut out drinks that contain a lot of sugar. Such drinks include soda, fruit drinks, and fruit juices. Replace these drinks with water. You are saving on empty calories and will feel much better.
- Don’t do your grocery shopping when you are hungry. You are more likely to make good, healthy food choices at the supermarket when you are not hungry.
- Learn what the correct portion size is and stick with it. For example, a serving of chicken or fish should be equivalent to the size of a deck of cards, a baked potato should be the size of a computer mouse, vegetables and fruits the size of your fist, and cheese should be the size of four cubes of dice. Use smaller plates and don’t go for seconds.
- When cooking, use olive or canola oil, not butter.
- It’s healthier to eat chicken or turkey in place of pork or beef
- Exercise: walk at least 30 minutes per day with 10,000 steps being your ultimate goal. Buy a good, accurate pedometer to keep track of your progress.
